Billy Lee Hackney, age 78, of Liberal,
passed away Monday, March 15, 2010, at Good Shepherd Nursing Home in Lockwood.
Bill was born July 22, 1931, in Moundville, Missouri,
the third of the four sons of Zuber and Agnes (Dozer) Hackney. A life-long area resident, Bill graduated
from Liberal High School in 1949. He was drafted into the U.S. Marine Corp and
served in Japan
during the Korean War. Returning home to
Liberal, Bill began his 33 year career in the grocery business. After the closing of the Liberal IGA, Bill
worked for 20 years as the custodian of Liberal High School. Always active in his community, Bill was a
member of Liberal Christian Church and the American Legion Post 289 Eccher
Patrick.. He was an avid traveler and
enjoyed many trips with family, but his favorite pastime was being the #1 fan
at his son, Craig, and granddaughters music engagements.
On
February 3, 1952, at Liberal, Bill married Donna Joan Thomas and they
celebrated 44 years together before her death April 16, 1996.
Survivors include two sons, Jim Hackney of
Marionville, Missouri and Craig & wife, La Nita Hackney of Lockwood; two
granddaughters, Kate and Jolean Hackney, Lockwood; three brothers, Bob Hackney,
Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, Joe Ed & wife Dorothy Hackney, Kansas City,
Missouri, and Don & wife Pat Hackney, Norwalk, California; two
sisters-in-law, Delores Rogers, Joplin, and Sandra & husband Bill Cignetti,
Frontenac, Kansas; a large extended family; and a host of friends.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, March 18th
at the Liberal High School Auditorium with Rev. Bob Fenwick officiating. Burial will be in Liberal Cemetery
with full military honors.
The family will receive friends from 7:00
until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at Daniel Funeral Home in Lamar.
