Jessie Wood

Jessie Bula Wood, age 78, of rural Sheldon, passed away Tuesday, August 10, 2010 at her home.        Jessie was born May 9, 1932, in Kansas City, Missouri, into a family of three children, and, at age five was adopted by Glen and Jaunita (Flaker) Rogers.  She graduated from Liberal High School in 1950.  Jessie attended SMS and Pittsburg State College as a physical education major, where she played college basketball and softball. During the summer she worked as a lifeguard at the Girl Scout Camp at Lake Ozark.  On June 11, 1953, she married Charles William Wood and they farmed in Barton County many years. Jessie was an active member of Milford Christian Church. She had served on the Barton County Library Board, and was instrumental in organizing the Liberal all-school reunions.  Jessie will be warmly remembered by countless friends and neighbors for her ready smile, generous hospitality, and her interest in others.        Survivors include her husband of 57 years, Charles, of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Clark & Cathy Wood, Sheldon; two daughters, Julia Roskamp, Concord, North Carolina and Jeanette Carpenter, Liberal, Missouri; a brother-in-law, John Ward, Bakersfield, California; 13 grandchildren, Andy & wife Lori Roskamp, Jessica & husband Steve Woods, Janelle & husband Eli Orozco, Joci Roskamp & fiancé Kendall Schuman, Justin, Nathan & Dustin Carpenter, Amanda Wood, Caleb & wife Janessa Wood, Colby, Addison, Casey and Andrea Wood; five great-grandchildren, Phillip, Anna, and Matthew Roskamp, Jackson Woods, and Charles W. Wood; a large extended family and a host of friends.  She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Dorothy Ward; a brother, J.B. Thomas; and a son-in-law, David Carpenter.        Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, August 13th at Milford Christian Church with burial in Moorehead Cemetery.        The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Thursday at Daniel Funeral Home in Lamar.        Memorial contributions are suggested to Milford Christian Church Missions in care of Daniel Funeral Home.
