Jewell Wells

Jewell L. Wells, age 100, of Lamar, passed away Thursday, August 25, 2011 at her home. Jewell was born April 12, 1911, at Iantha, Missouri, to Harvey and Edna (Burr) DeHart.  She graduated from Lamar High School with the class of 1929 and furthered her education at Pittsburg State College and Kansas City Business College. On May 4, 1931, at Kansas City, Jewell married Louis Wells and they made their home in Independence, Missouri for forty years.  She worked as a secretary in the Kansas City School District for 27 years and was an assistant in the Independence office of motor vehicle registration for several years. After retiring in 1972, Jewell and Louis moved from Independence back to Lamar.  Always active in her community, Jewell was a past-president of the Home & Garden Club and the Twentieth Century Club.  She was a member of Lamar United Methodist Church where she belonged to the Martha Ruth Circle. Jewell was preceded in death by her husband, Louis, June 20, 1996.  She was also preceded in death by a son, Richard Wells; a granddaughter, Susan Finley; a grandson, Robbie Wells; and two brothers, Lee and Harold DeHart. Survivors include a son, Louis, Jr. & his wife Florence Wells, Doraville, Georgia; a daughter-in-law, Irene Wells, Belton, Missouri; two grandchildren, Debbie & husband Paul Phillips and Randy & wife Linda Wells; and six great-grandchildren, Samantha Johnson, Jamie Phillips, Leanne and Robyn Finley, Lakon and Cameron Wells. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 27th at Daniel Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. Saturday.  Burial will be in Lake Cemetery.   Memorial contributions are suggested to the Lamar United Methodist Church Library in care of Daniel Funeral Home.
