John Richard Craven, age 81, of Lamar, passed away Wednesday, September 5, 2012 at Freeman Hospital West.
John was born November 22, 1930, in Portland, Oregon, to Richard and Amy (Hallsworth) Craven. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1947 and served aboard the U.S.S. Pasadena and the U.S.S. LST. before returning home in 1951.
On October 20, 1951, at San Marisso, California, John married the love of his life, Dorothy Irene Szalay. They made their home and raised their family in California where John worked as a plumber for many years. In March 2012, John and Dorothy moved to Lamar to be near family.
Survivors include his wife, one son and daughter-in-law, Dan and Peggy Craven, Lamar; one daughter Janet Walker, and her husband William, of Fontain Valley, California; one sister, Ruth Fuller, of Portland, Oregon; 11 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and two more on the way.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Susan Craven, and a brother, Leslie Craven.
Honoring John's wishes, his ashes will be laid to rest in San Diego, California.
