June Nettie Cross, age 92, of Lamar, passed away Sunday morning, December 17, 2017, at Good Shepherd Nursing Home in Lockwood.
June was born June 30, 1925, in Dickinson County, Iowa, the youngest of the four children of Norman and Minnie (Rust) Huehn. She moved with her family to Minnesota where she graduated from Round Lake High School in 1943. Immediately after graduating, June went to work at a Defense Plant in Wisconsin to support the troops in World War II. On March 6, 1949, at Round Lake Lutheran Church, she married Walter Schipull. They made their home and farmed near Brewster, Minnesota for a short time before moving to Missouri where they farmed near Walnut Grove and later Golden City. Walt passed away January 14, 1974 and June settled in Lockwood where she worked as a CNA at Good Shepherd Nursing Home. On August 9, 1981, June married Dean Cross and they enjoyed traveling and visiting family in California and Arizona. After Dean’s passing on June 4, 1987, June continued to spend winters in Arizona and summers in Missouri for the next ten years. In 1997, she moved to an apartment in Lamar to be near family.
June met every challenge in her life with an indomitable spirit, a positive attitude, and a wonderful smile. With determination and a depression era work ethic, she farmed, raised large gardens, managed her household, and was always ready to share with anyone in need. Active in her community, June was a member of Lockwood American Legion and Lamar VFW Auxiliary, and enjoyed the fellowship of her friends in Fiber Art Guild. She had been a faithful member of Lutheran churches everywhere she lived and worshipped at Grace Lutheran Church in Lamar as long as her health permitted.
In addition to her parents and both husbands, June was preceded in death by a brother, Alvin Huehn; a sister, Laurene Kroeger; a sister-in-law, Lorraine Huehn; a grandson, Brandon Peel; a niece, Elaine Huehn; and a nephew, Bruce Huehn.
Survivors include her son, Norman (Rhonda) Schipull, Lamar; her daughter, Joann (David) Myers, Republic, Missouri; a brother, Clifford “Hooley” Huehn, Luverne, Minnesota; six grandchildren, Stacy, Jason, Jennifer, Stephanie, Andrew, and Sarah; seven great-grandchildren, Katelund, Brenton, Joshua, Kaleb, Alex, Tristan, and Molly; and large extended Huehn, Schipull and Cross family.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at Grace Lutheran Church where the family will receive friends from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery.
Memorial contributions are suggested to Lockwood American Legion, Lamar VFW Auxiliary, or Grace Lutheran Church, in care of the funeral home.
