Katherine Shaw

Katherine Virginia Shaw   Katherine Virginia Shaw, 85, of Normal, IL passed away Wednesday, March 31, 2010 at Advocate BroMenn Medical Center, Normal.  Katherine was born October 7, 1924 in Laredo, MO, a daughter of Vern Truman Beckner, Sr., and Martha "Mattie" Annin Cross Beckner. She attended school in Laredo and graduated from Laredo High School in 1942, afterwhich she worked for Western Union Telegraph in Kansas City for four years.  On August 4, 1946, she married Raymond Glenn Shaw.  He preceded her in death on March 26, 1966.  In 1967 she received her bachelors degree in education and later earned a masters degree in librarianship. In 1973, she received the title of Educational Specialist. Katherine was a librarian at University High School, Normal, IL and Milner Library at Illinois State University for many years and was a long-time member of Grace Church in Normal. She chartered the church library and also started the mission garage sale held annually at the church. Katherine was Illinois State University alumni and a member of the American Library Association.    Katherine is survived by her two sons, Daniel (Lois) Shaw of Normal and James (Barb) Shaw of Pleasant Plains, IL; two granddaughters Angie Shaw of Chicago and Elyse Shaw of St. Louis, MO; and a brother William M. (Maycie) Beckner of Rockville, MD. She is further survived by numerous cousins, nieces and nephews and their children. Katherine was preceded in death by her parents, husband Raymond and a brother Vern T. Beckner, Jr.   Katherine loved her family deeply.  She loved the Lord and looked forward to going home to be with Jesus.   Visitation will be held on Monday, April 5, 2010 at Grace Church 1311 W. Hovey Ave., Normal, from 5-7pm. Funeral services will begin at 11am Tuesday, April 6 at the church, Pastors Ed Scearce and Len Thebarge will officiate.   The family will receive friends from 9 – 11 am Thursday, April 8th at Daniel Funeral Home. Graveside Service will be 2:00 pm in the Liberal City Cemetery, Liberal, MO.  In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Grace Church Library are respectfully requested in Katherine’s memory.
