Margie Sara May Houston, age 95, of Lamar,
passed away Monday, November 9, 2009, at the home of her daughter in Carthage,
Missouri.
Margie was born October 25, 1914, in Stotesbury, Missouri,
the youngest of the six children of Abram and Kathryn (Boyd) Rutherford. She graduated from Stotesbury
High School in 1933 and attended Fort Scott
College. On September 23, 1935, at Nevada,
Missouri,
Margie married Homer Houston, and they had celebrated 49 years together before
his death on April 19, 1984. She was
also preceded in death by her three brothers, Hugh, Roscoe, and Russell Rutherford;
two sisters, Hildred Politte and Martha Belle Bryce; and a grandson, Steven De
Witt.
Survivors include three daughters and their
husbands, Sarabelle & Steve De Witt, Lamar, Kathy & Larry Onstott,
Lamar; and Becky & Mike Pickering, Carthage;
ten grandchildren, Todd De Witt, Trisha Stettler, Ashley De Witt, Berry
Onstott, Kendra Huntley, Shelly Bryant, Kylene Powell, Derek Moser, Russell
Pickering, and Lisa Cole; 19 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandson.
In addition to being a homemaker, Margie
had held a variety of jobs and worked many different places, including the Lake
City Defense Plant during World War II; Russell Stover and Montgomery Ward in Kansas City; and
O’Sullivan Industries in Lamar. A devoted
wife, mother, and grandmother, Margie’s greatest pleasure was her family. She was a wonderful cook and an accomplished
seamstress. She enjoyed basketball, had
been an avid fisherman, and proudly wore the title of “shopaholic.” Margie was a member of Lamar Assembly of God
Church and the O’Sullivan Retirees.
A graveside funeral service will be held
at 3:00 p.m. Thursday, November 12th at West Liberty
Cemetery near Stotesbury
with Pastor Derek Moser officiating.
The family will receive friends from 6:00
until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at Daniel Funeral Home in Lamar.
Memorial contributions are suggested to
the American Heart Association or American Cancer Society, in care of Daniel
