Roy Thompson

Roy Lee Thompson, age 93, of rural Lamar, passed away Wednesday, October 5, 2011 at his home.       Roy was born January 25, 1918, at Minneola, Kansas, the fifth of the six children of Leo and Mattie (Hunter) Thompson.  He graduated from Larned High School and worked on the family farm before enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corp in 1939.  Roy was stationed in Hawaii, working in the radio tower during the attack on Pearl Harbor and remained on active duty in the Pacific Theatre through the end of World War II.       On December 2, 1939, at Central Chapel Church, Roy married Marjorie Nadine Fry and they made their home in Barton County.  In addition to farming, Roy was also the manager of Iantha MFA for many years.  He was an active member of Oakton United Methodist Church.       Survivors include his wife of 71 years, Marjorie, of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Don & Sue Thompson who returned to Missouri five years ago to care for Roy and Marjorie; seven grandchildren, Grace, Hanna, Buck, and Gabe Thompson, Mark, Steven, and Darren Warner; and four great-grandchildren, Dustin, Gabriel, Adrian, and Wolfie.  Roy was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Louise Warner; one brother; and four sisters.       A graveside funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, October 8th at Sheldon Cemetery with Chaplain Daniel Mullins officiating.
