Trula Cain

Trula Enola Cain, age 90, passed away Wednesday, September 29, 2010 at Barton County Memorial Hospital.      Trula was born January 20, 1920, in Latimer, Kansas.  She was the daughter of Lillian (Sutherland) and Otto Theel.  She was a resident of Lamar for over half her life.       After graduating from Emporia High School in 1938, Trula attended the College of Emporia and then graduated from Newman Memorial County Hospital in Emporia with an R.N. degree.       She was united in marriage with Alvin Russell Cain on Christmas Day, 1942, in Kansas City, Missouri.  He passed away July 10, 2005.  She was also preceded in death by her parents, Otto and Lillian Theel; her brother, Edwin Theel of Emporia, Kansas; her sister, Berniece Gray of California; and her granddaughter, Lauren Beth Selvey.      Trula was very involved in her community.  She was a Girl Scout leader in the 1950’s and helped organize the Lamar Girl Scout Day Camp.  She was a 4-H leader in the 1960’s.  As a 30 year member of Barton County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, she created and donated flower arrangements for their gift shop to sell.  Trula also taught procedures classes for the aides at BCMH in the 1950’s and organized and trained the Candy Stripers at BCMH in the 1960’s and 70’s.   Trula was a Lamar City Park Board member for 23 years, 8 of which she served as secretary.  Her great love for animals prompted her to organize the Barton County Humane Society for which she served as president for over 25 years.      Trula was a member (and past president) of P.E.O. Chapter EP for almost 50 years.  She was a member of the Lamar Country Club, a women’s bowling league, and a member of the Ladies’ and a Couples’ Bridge Club.      Trula was a breast cancer survivor (1964) and helped many struggling with the disease.      Trula was honored on several occasions being named the Beta Sigma Phi “Woman of the Year” in 1978, the Business & Professional Women’s “Woman of the Year”, and the Republican Women’s “Woman of the Year.”      Survivors include three daughters, Cheryl Alderson and friend Ed Cooper of Sunrise Beach, MO, Marilyn and husband Robert Selvey of Lamar, and Karen and husband Max Simmons of Lamar.  She was also blessed to have three grandchildren:  Kara and husband Lee Eggerman, Matthew Simmons and Sara Simmons; and two great grandchildren.  She is also survived by her brother, Don Theel, of St. Louis.      Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, October 3rd at Lamar United Methodist Church.  Burial will be in Lake Cemetery.      Memorial contributions are suggested to Lamar United Methodist Church or Barton County Humane Society in care of Daniel Funeral Home.
